Advice on used 1855 for sale

I'm considering an 1855 for sale and don't know anything about these girls. Paint and sheet metal are good. Clutch, engine and transmission sound and feel good. Steering is fabulous, I've never driven anything that steered that nice! Recent rebuild on the Hydraul-Shift, works good.

Now for the not-so-good stuff. Oil slings out the engine front main seal. Couldn't see any antifreeze in the radiator and didn't see any obvious leaks. Owner says it "uses a little" antifreeze. The hydraulic pump has been replaced sometime. It's painted blue. The pump has a couple of drippy leaks at what looks like pressure or flow control valves. The PTO only works when the lever is held in the engaged position. What can cause that? The owner uses a rubber tie down strap to hold it in. Brakes work some but take considerable effort to make anything happen, can't slide the tires. I searched the archives without finding an identical PTO problem but get the feeling the PTO and brake problems are related to sticky hydraulic valves.

Don't remember if the hour meter works or what it said. Asking price is $4200 with so-so rear tires, $5000 with nice 20.8 X 34s. Is it worth it? Are 1855 engines reliable? I don't want something I have to pour a bunch more money into then wonder if the engine is going lay down.

I know I have a lot of questions. I appreciate any help anyone can offer. Tractor is located in southeasten Ohio. Thanks!

Judging by your description, I would avoid purchase of the tractor. The 310 CI Waukesha Turbo diesel engine is fairly reliable. However, the engines have a tendency to leak head gaskets (hence the antifreeze problem). The front main oil seal sounds like a definite problem; it will probably only worsen. The other problems (brakes, PTO) shouldn`t be too severe (or costly) to fix. Overall, the tractor has too many problems for the price. I have seen 1850s with the Perkins 354 diesel on fresh rebuild go for $4400 and 1950Ts with rebuilds go for $4800. I hope this adds insight to your decision. Good luck either way you decide.

Joe, thanks for your insight and prices. I'd just about decided this tractor had too many potential troubles. You helped make up my mind. The front main seal wasn't a big concern but the disappearing antifreeze bothered me. Thanks again!
