the battery on my oliver 60 will not hold a charge.

even if i turn the ignition button and the lights off, and let it sit for as much as 24 hours, the battery runs down. not just run down really, flat dead. i've exchanged this brand new wal-mart battery 4 times in the last 9 months.

the battery is 12 volts, and the tractor has a generator. supposedly the system was switched to 12 volts, but this is how i bought the tractor, so i don't have first-hand knowledge.

the amp meter reads as if the battery is charging when the tractor is running. nevertheless, it will not hold a charge.

i am (obviously) the village idiot where my tractor is concerned. what suggestions do the experts have??

rwd Certainly check for shorts but on this type of system one of the most common things to occur is to have the points inside of the regulator stick. This will create a dead short in the system. You can unplug the regulator after running the tractor, until you get ready to start the tractor again. If the battery has stayed up then you have probably found your problem. Good Luck. Shadetree

If I read you correctly the battery is going down in a non-running condition. I would inspect the wiring for a shorted "hot" wire.

UN HOOK YOUR BATT. IN THE DARK IF IT SPARKS THEN YOU HAVE A SHORT IN THE SYSTEM SOME THINGS ARE CHEAPER IF LEFT TO THE PROFESIONALS IF YOU TAKE OFF THE REGULATOR AND GENERATOR AND TAKE IT TO AN AUTOMOTIVE ELECTRICAL SHOP THEY WILL TEST IT FOR YOU AT A VERY REASONABLE RATE

For $20 or so, a mechanic with a good battery/generator/alternator tester can check the system and find your trouble, saving your pulling out your hair. My guess is that, if indeed your tractor has been properly converrted to 12 volts, as the above posts suggested, you have a generator/regulator short or a shorted wire. If your tractor has a twelve volt battery, but a 6 volt generator/regulator, it will show charge on the gauge, but the battery will never be fully charged. Hope this helps.
