Can anyone tell me what diesel engine would be compatable to replace my gas engine, also how many horsepower does a 1655 gas tractor have.

My dad and I have used a 1967 model 1650 with the Waukesha motor for over 20 years and over 6000 hours. One rebuild of the motor and 2 head gaskets and 2 rebuilds of the Hi-Lo range. Not bad. He loves the motor so much he just bought a 2-70 White which is nothing but a 1655 with new paint. He has already put over 2000 hours on it in less than 5 years and he is still running the 1650.

The 1655 gas engine should have minimum 58 on the drawbar and 70 at the PTO. Most had a little more Hp then that. The diesel engine for that tractor is a 283 Waukesha. I have one and it is a fair engine. I would not recommend putting that engine into your 1655, I am not a big Waukesha fan. I am gathering parts up now to repower my 1655 this fall with a 354 perkins or a 5.9L cummins with no turbos on them. I have never tried to switch a gas to a diesel before, but it cant be too hard. Just my two cents.

I dont agree about the Waukesha, excellent torque and fuel effiecincy, little pricey to rebuild, but all I6 diesels are. We have had 4 of them, 262 on s88d, 283 on and 880d(Wish I had that one back!), 283d w/direct injection in a late 1650, and a 310 in an 1855.. real nice runner, lots of tractor there. They are a great motor if you know how to build them... If not, find someone who does.

Personally I have just not had very good luck with the Waukesha's. Seems 1655 with the 283 diesel and the 1855 with the 310 diesel are always in the shop for an engine problem. Small stuff mostly but they are always leaking or breaking something. My 1655 is down now because it blew a head gasket out of the blue. I am just much happier with the service out of my 1850 with the 354 Perkins, it spends very little time down. Could be I just have some lemons, but I am going to repower both of those tractors in the next two years, and get rid of the Waukesha's.

according to a lot of the posts I have seen on here, they are supposed to have weak cranks and sometimes throw rods. especially when turboe'd.
Then again, I have seen posts from people who are completely satisfied with them. Myself, I like my perkins.

310's where supposed to have a crank problem, but there really wasn't. Split wrist pins came apart and created the crank probs.. they are a 7 bearing motor (all of them 262..283..310) and are very strong. the 310's where pretty much a stroked
283. Oliver designed the motor and hired waukashaw to build them. Oh yea, I just purchased another 1650, this is an older one with the crossfire injection (1966).
