39' Oliver 70

I recently aquired a 1939 Oliver 70 that is pretty complete, however not running. The serial number on the side of the tractor reads: 227088. This tells me that it is indeed a 1939. The block casting is D600A619W. I am trying to find out as much about this tractor as possible. I have noticed from other posts that there is confusion among whether the 70 was a 4 or six speed. I don't have any facts, but I can tell you mine is a six speed, with PTO. Do I have a HART-PARR engine? It is missing an exhaust manifold (as I have found out this is not uncommon), and I can't seem to find one used or otherwise. Any info on this tractor would be much appreciated.

Your tractor has a engine built by Continetial Motors to Oliver's design. Early tractors had a 3 timing gear engine, and later had a 5 timeing gear engine, yours is the 5 gear engine. Early 70s had a 4 speed transmission to limit the travel speed due to steel wheels. The early tractors did not have all of the transmission gears and had a slug behind one of the shifting rails. Later tractors had all of the gears installed, however, if the tractor was shipped with steel wheels, the slug was installed. When steel wheels were cut down for tire rims, some dealers removed the slug to allow higher travel speeds. By the way the model 70 was the highest production number tractor from Oliver with over 85,000 built.
