I have been using a grooming mower on my oliver 550 and it worked great until yesterday. I engage the pto and it works fine and then suddenly it quits and I push the engage stick back and it starts mowing again. I finally had to hold the engage "stick" all the way back to finish cutting . Anyone have a idea or two on whats wrong and how costly it might be.....Dennis

Better hope it just needs adjustment. The fiber disks are $48 each and it is recommended that you change all five. I just rebuilt mine. Maibach's was very helpful, but the parts aren't cheap!

Sound like a simple pto clutch adjustment is all that is required. Remove the access cover underneath the clutch housing. All you need to do is spin the ajuster to compensate for wear.

Here is the section from the manual on adjusting the PTO clutch:

"To adjust the clutch, stop the engine and release the power take-off clutch by pushing the clutch control lever forward. Remove the metal hand hole cover from under the tractor center frame. Reach through the hole and rotate the power take-off clutch assembly until the adjusting ring lock pin is on the bottom side of the assembly. Wit a screw driver, depress the lock pin and totate the adjusting ring to the next notch. Continue to turn the adjusting ring in a clockwise direction to tighten the clutch or counterclockwise direction to loosen the clutch until the clutch is properly adjusted. Then reinstall the hand hole cover.

The power take-off clutch equipped with the 26-inch long control lever and 5 clutch discs is properly adjustd when a force of about 32 pounds applied to the clutch control lever two feet above the control lever pivot is required to engage the clutch or 45 pounds on a 6 disc clutch. On older models having the short 16 inch power take off control lever, a force of 50 pounds is required at the upper end of the lever while pulling back to engage the 5 disc clutch or 67-1/2 pounds for a 6 disc clutch."

Sounds easy. If you have a spring scale like the ones for weighing fish, that will work. Good luck.

The parts manual and the service manual will be a great resource. I bought the Jenn Sales repair manual and it covers fleetline, supers, and three digit series. It is like 3 phone books. It was a bit expensive jover $100. If you get the I&T manual, it is only about $20 and will get you through most maintenance work.
