Just bought an 1850 with over/under. It doesn't seem to work at all. Any help or hints appreciated.

WFE is right, the O/U is pretty easy to repair[alot easier than a Hydra-power]. If overdrive is the only speed that is out, it may be that previous owners pulled heavy loads in overdrive. This is a pretty bullet-proof unit, but I have seen this happen when heavy tillage work is done using overdrive all the time. WB.

Thanks for the help. I feel better about it now.
I also need a hood and left side panel if you happen to see one.

First thing to do is the obvious. Drain old fluid (automatic transmission fluid), and refill, put on new filter. If this changes nothing, unit probably needs to be overhauled. Not a big deal. Pull engine and 2 speed as one unit. Just make sure you pull the PTO shaft before pulling engine. Take the 2 speed to a mechanic who is fully knowledgeable about overhauling these units. They're not expensive to overhaul.

Ditto on removal procedure and trying a fluid/filter change to see if it makes a difference. I'd make sure the linkage is working as well, all the way down to the unit. Verify that the control spool is moving, as these units are extremely reliable and seldom give any trouble. But if teardown is necessary, as said, they are inexpensive to rebuild and can be done without any specialty tools so if you get your hands on a shop manual section of the Over/Under transmission, you can easily do the work yourself. Figure on new seals at least and clutch disks if they are bad (many times they are not). If you don't need clutch disks and do the work yourself, should only run $100 to get it back up and running.

Tried the fluid and filter change. It seems to be going into underdrive now, but not in to overdrive. Gives a good hard shift coming out of underdrive.

What you are experiencing now is typical when they need the clutch pak. Just as well pull the unit out of the tractor and take it to a White dealer and get it fixed right. This unit will then run for a long time. Have a 1550 that we bought new in 1966. Has over 7,000 hrs and just had to rebuild the 2 speed a couple years ago. Has a 1850 that we bought new in 1965, was used hard and only had the 2 speed rebuilt once, and that was after 25 years of reliable service.

If you don't need the tractor for spring work, I wouldn't be afraid to tear into the unit. Pretty straightforward and you can inspect each piece. Like before, I would replace all seals and sealing rings with the AGCO seal kit for Over/Unders as long as you're in there. If you have under and direct, pump must be okay. Dealer should be able to copy Over/Under section for you for reference. Good luck. Nice to have all 3 speeds.
