Is 4 disk plow to much for my 550 Dsl?

Late this winter and early this spring I "broke" new ground (old pine plantation) using a 2 disk plow and have been disking to prep for pasture planting (Pensacola Bahia).

Now that this gound has been worked, do you think a 4 disk plow is to much for my Oliver 550 Dsl? Oliver 550 was originally rated as a 3 bottom plow tractor.

I've a chance to buy a 4 disk plow, but don't want to buy something I can't use. The plow is old with about 5" dia. axles for the disks, disks are ~28" but not verified. Has 3pth, made by Taylor-Way?

ShepFL, the rule of thumb i've seen is 15 HP per bottom/disc on a plow.

if this is correct thus you would need 60 HP minimum to pull your 4-disc plow.

i'm off the top of my head here, but don't recall the S55/550 producing beyone 50 HP. you may be at the outer limits of your 550s capabilities with a 4-disc plow.

Hey guys
Lets get back to the real world - lately I've seen post that give the impression that the S55/550 is putting out HP that would give the S88's a run for their money! 50+ hp ---I don't think so!!
My book says that the S55 = 144 cid = Max. corrected drawbar hp of 30.75 for the gas and 28.97 for the diesel! The 550 has 155 cid and that is less than a 10% increase so you may expect no more than a 10% increase in hp. 30.75 + 3.075 = 33.075 hp!!! and the diesel is 28.97 + 2.897 = 31.867 hp. These numbers may not be exact but they are close. Maybe some one with a 550 book can give us the exact numbers (corrected max. drawbar hp)
I have a S55 diesel and I can tell you that "IT AINT NO 40 HP TRACTOR" It does handle two 16" plows in light ground but can't cut it in heavy soil. I have never pulled a "disc plow" so I don't have any Idea if you could pull 4 of them - But I don't think that you could even pick up(without adding 500# of wt. to the front end) a good 4 bottom moldboard plow let alone pull it after it went in the ground. Heck my MF285 needs 200# added and it is 85 hp and pulls 4 - 16"s.

I don't have "the book" handy, but my recollection is that the Nebraska test on the 550 diesel was 39 or 40 HP PTO. I agree with your assessment- it's a 2 plow tractor.
