77 Governor

Trying to set the governor on the 77. Following the instructions in the manual, when I back out the bump screw on the governor to set high speed, the engine surges real bad. When I turn the bump screw in enough to stop the surging, I can't get the RPM over about 1600. I pulled the bump screw and the spring was badly deformed, so I got a new one from Maibachs. This didn't seem to help. However, the spring is shorter than the pin on the end of the bump screw, this doesn't make sense to me. According to the pictures in the manual the spring is somewhat longer than the pin. Any idea how long the pin is supposed to be, and how long the spring is supposed to be? Any other ideas on the cause of the problem? P.S. I have pulled the air cleaner and checked linkage etc. to make sure nothing is dragging or binding.

Have you checked the thrust washer behind the flyweight assembly? If that washer is worn excessively it will cause governor problems. You have to remove housing and pull weight assy off. It will be between the weight assy and the front of block.

I haven't pulled the governor, but that will be the next step, if I can't fix the problem.
