We have a 1650 (also 1600 and 1850) that do the same thing, especially after a hard pull. I attribute it to the lower quality fuel the refiners pass off as "gasoline" anymore.

Stuff I've found that helps: Switch spark plugs to one or two heat ranges cooler. Set the idle speed low as possible - about 450 RPM. Let the motor idle for 3 or 4 minutes before shutting down. Make sure the governor handle is all the way back before turning the key off. Use 91 or 93 octane gas (effective, but not worth an 20 cents extra a gallon to an already excessive fuel price for me!). Finally if all else fails, simply put the transmission into 6th and the hydro into direct, then quickly release the clutch while holding the brakes - the engine WILL stop immediately!

Great advice. I'd also check to be sure the engine isn't overheating. Check the cooling system top to bottom. Also, carbon deposits in the combustion chambers can be a cause.

For what it's worth, I use 91 octane in my 1650 per the owner's manual and have never had a "run on" problem, even on 100F days.
