I am not familiar with the specifics of Oliver tractors, but hope to purchase one for restoration. I am considering anything diesel from an 1800 on up (since age 3, I was always fascinated when the farmers would go past our house on 1850's, 1900's, etc.) I looked at an 1850 and an 1855 yesterday, both with 6-cyl. Waukesha diesels. I suspect these are not "original" engines. What brands of diesel engines were Olivers delivered with on these and similar models? Does anyone have an opinion on the Waukeshas? Am I correct in preferring a Perkins? Any price guides for 1855's etc.? Many thanks. -Jim in NE Ohio.

The Waukesha engine was the OEM of the 1855 Olivers. We have one 1855 Turbo. The head gasket has blown out several time and rebuilt twice. I could tell you the whole story but I have limited space. Both times a rod #1 went through the block I personlly remove and reinstalled the engine. This engine,I was told by the motor rebuilders was the same engine for 1655-1855 and that in the larger tractors the motor had a hard time staying together. Great tractor of their time.Have any further ? email me or if you like to hear the story.

If you are thinking of using it harder you may want to go to a 1755 it is the same except there is no turbo to go bad, they put out about 86HP. Grandpa had a diesel they run it prity hard puling a 4 botom plow at full throttel they never had problems. I have hered that 1855 had trobel keeping there rods but they had the turbo and may
have been turned up to.

Some of the 1850's were factory equipped with the 310 also. This is reflected in the facts book I have, altough there is no serial number breakdown or reason why two similar power engines were available. I personally suspect slow sles of the 1950 left some 310's laying around so they used them toe avoid having to buy Perkins. I have seen both and overall the owners have been satisfied with either. The extensive comments on the 310 should be archived for use, there was some very good advice there.

As mentioned, the 1855 should have the Waukesha engine and the 1850 should have the Perkins. If you are interested, I have an 1855 for sale that has the updates done to the engine and I am probably not too far away. E-mail me for more details if you are interested.

The 1850 diesel came out with a natually aspirated 354 Perkins. As far as I know, this is the only Oliver that came out with the Perkins. I haven't seen anything bad written on the 354.
The 1855 D came with a turbocharged 310 Waukesha. The 310 in the 1855 has been known to cause some problems in the original configuration, some sending a rod through the side of the block. Having read over this site for a year or so, there are experts out there on properly setting up the 310 with the correct part numbers etc. I believe it may have been a balancing problem, and the last ones out also had beefier connecting rods. This is one of the more discussed topics on this site. The Wasukesha typically is a very good engine, and powers probably the majority of the Olivers. The 1900-1950 series came with two-cycle Detroit Diesels, the screamers. I believe the 1950-T was the first version of the turbocharged Waukesha 310, (see above). The 1955 D was again the 310 T. Moving up from there in the late sixties, the 2050 D and 2150 D had the 478 Hercules, the latter was turbocharged. I would kinda' like to get one of these as a toy someday. The early 2255s had the model 3150 Caterpillar V-8, later and last ones had the model 3208. dwm
