Boosting 6v with 12v batteries

In YT magazine there is an article about converting 6volt systems to 12volt. One of the points they make is that it is unnecessary to change the starter. If it is unnecessary to change the starter, it should be okay to hook the booster cables from a charged 12v battery directly onto the starter terminals. What do you think? Is this a good way to boost or can a guy boost from a 12v battery jumper cabled to the 6 volt battery or should a person be safe and only boost a 6v battery with a 6v battery?

I converted my Super 77 to 12 volts in 1992 when I overhauled it and put in a new clutch. I used M&W Power Seal pistons and sleeves and there was no way the 6 volt system would have started it. You can also use an 8 volt battery with a 6 volt system, lights and generator included, but it is only marginally better. I have had no trouble with my starter in the 7 years since and it starts instantly even at 0 F. The starter cranks much faster and for a shorter time than it did at 6 volts. The starter will have 1/2 the amps going through it at 12 v than at 6v (doubling the voltage halves the current) just like a motor at 220 volts pulls 1/2 as many amps as the same motor wired to run at 110 volts. High amperage is what causes the starter to burn up not the increased voltage. I also switched to a self excited Delco Alternator, 12 volt lights and coil and switched to negative ground by reversing the battery, coil and ammeter connections . In my situation I would not go back to a 6 volt system even though my current setup is not original equipment. I use the tractor so being 100% accurate is not my main concern.

Rod,

The danger in boosting a 6V battery with a 12V battery is an explosion. Plastic chunks-a-flyin', acid all over your face, not a pretty picture. Jumping a 6V starter with a 12V will make the starter motor turn faster and deliver more torque, it may also burn up the armature/winding and make the starter useless. It probably won't blow to bits in your face though. If you must jump a 6V with a 12V connect the 6V first, the 12V last; then unhook the 12V first and the 6V last. As for converting a vehicle or tractor to 12V from 6V, you're going to burn out your starter in a shorter amount of time if you don't change to a 12V or step the voltage and amperage down with some form of resistor. On the other hand, if you've got some spare starters and your motor is tight or hard to start, it'll really whirl with 12V put through the 6V starter. Good luck.
