I just bought a Oliver 7800 with hydro crysler 400 ind engine at auction for $120. It sat for 5 years in a shed. We did get it runing and every thing works but it lacks power and smokes alot. Was there a diesel offered for these? What does it take to convert it or is it not worth the hassle? Whats the difference between this and a 8800? Or the 7800 and my 5555? I also bought a 8700 diesel hydro for $1600 in fair to good condition was it worth it? Also got a 708N $800 and a 20' quick cut $850. Where is a good place to find 6 row heads for the 8700 in MN or northern IA?

i have two oliver 7600 series combines. one is a gear drive, the other is a hydrostatic. i'm spoiled with the hydro as i select which gear i want and use the hydro lever to adjust speed. both machines have chrysler 318 cu in motors. the first thing i would do with your machine is to have the carb professionally cleaned and dry set to specs. the second thing i would check is the governor, as a mafunctioning or improperly set one will greatly effect performance. also check to see if you have a plugged fuel filter or sediment bowl, as this will greatly reduce fuel flow and result in loss of power; especially under load. smoke at the exhaust may be caused by sticking or worn rings, or oil getting past worn valve seals. i use a 704w for corn and a 15 ft plaform on beans. speeds dont vary much over 2mph in heavy corn or drilled beans.

This is not exactly what you asked for - combine or location, but you might find it interesting. Sharp Bros used to be the Oliver dealer in Indy. If the weather is decent, I'll try to get some prices.

Coatesville, IN Just found out I can't go, so went last night and looked. I was interested in hyd parts and they have several pallets of them (but are they good?). Saw a 70 engine, NOS radiator for 770 and a combine. Quite a few NOS tillage parts. Equipment is pretty much per the billing.

I will answer first so the other readers can pick it apart. The 7800 was offered with a Perkins 354 turbo diesel but the gas engine was standard. I don't know what you would get into trying to convert. The basic separator is the same as the 8800 but there are a few small differences. Most parts will interchange. The 5555 was the predecessor to the 7800. The 5555 came out in 1968 and was replaced by the 7800 in 1970 I think. Not much difference there either. I think you got a steal with the 8700. We had one until 2 years ago-traded for CaseIH 1640. Bought it new in 1984. Ran a 15ft grain head fine and pick 4 rows of 180bu corn 4.5 to 5 MPH. Will handle 6 row corn head but will have to slow down. I don't know about your 20 ft grain head on the 8700. It may be a little much. The worst thing about the quick cut head is the pitman drive. You have to keep everything tight and in top-notch condition or you will shake the head to pieces. I think you did all right as far as the money spent. I don't know where to tell you to look for heads out there.
