Maybe somebody out there can help me out. I've got an Avery A with a Hercules IXB3 engine in it (133 cubic inches with a 3 1/4" bore). I came across a stuck Hercules engine that someone had mounted on an old combine this week. It is a IXE3 Hercules with a 2 3/4" bore and would have a displacement of about 95 cubic inches from my calculations. Both engines have a 4" stroke. Does anyone know what the smaller version of the engine might have originally been off? And, other than the bore size difference, are they the same engine? If they were the same, I'd pick this one up for spare parts.

I have a Hercules 1xb3 engine in my OC/3 Crawler, that refuses to run smoothly. Have replaced Tillotson carburater with a new Marvel Shibler,& no difference in preformance was observed. The engine when throttled to wice open, just accelerates& decelerates constantly, will not run smoothly. Tractor Manuel implys fault is a DIRTY GOUVENOR, is that possible??? How could gouvener be dirty??? Any help in diagnosis would be appreciated.

As far as I could tell (from a 1940 Thompson Products (forerunner of TRW)) manual, the IX series of Hercules engines were one family based on the same block. The only thing different was the bore size, and any parts dependent on that. I don't knowe if the valves were different. I could not find any instance of a farm tractor using the IXE but it was offered for industrial use. hope this little bit helps
