Cant get the governor adjusted on the tractor I follow the I/C manuls but it just slows on down instead of picking up . Any help will be great!!!!

I think its time to pull it off the tractor and check it out internaly - one that I worked on had the cross shaft that the fly wts. are attached to, broke loose from the shaft - they are not fastened very well - had to resilver solder back in place.
New ones are expensive!!!

Governors: Have two forces, the spring is always trying to speed up the engine and the flyweights are always trying to slow it down. When you increase the throttle position, you increase the spring tension, overcoming centrifugal force of the flyweights, opening the throttle plate in the carb. allowing more fuel and air to enter. As the revs increase the flyweights centrifugal force increases overcoming the spring and leveling off the speed to where you adjusted the spring tension (High speed). Of course when the engine is loaded the rpms drop and the spring can overcome the reduced centrifugal force of the flyweights allowing the carb to open up. After the load lightens and speed increases the balance is again obtained. The components must be free to move. Most of the problems is that the fingers on the cast fork that is pinned to the cross shaft has a flat place worn where it is running against the sliding bearing on the shaft. The fork is always trying to get back into the flat spot causing a surge. If you carefully dress the fork off to its orginal rounded shape they will most generally operate properly. Of course improper fuel mixture and air leaks in the intake system can cause surging also. There was problems with the flyweight support coming loose on the shaft, when that happened the flyweights slowed or stopped and the spring slamed the carb wide open and you had runaway rpm (voice of experience, been there and had that happen). The small spring that someone refered to in another post is only there to smooth out low idle roll.
