I just got my newly acquired Oliver Super 55 home
yesterday. It is restorable, and I'll get it
together over the next few months, In the
meantime, some questions: It has an 8 volt battery
(positive ground), a 6 volt generator and starter,
and a 6 volt coil! Does this work? Right now the
battery is dead, the generator doesn't generate,
and a 6 volt battery charger only charges at a 1
amp rate. Tomorrow I will switch batteries with my
8N Ford, but I am curious about this 8 volt
battery business. Anyone have any ideas? I've
also got manifold leaks, gasline leaks,
inoperative hydraulics, and other minor problems. It'll be fun!

Three votes for 12 volt, 0 for 8 volt. Makes
sense to me, this is going to be a working
tractor, since I've already got a parade type.
I've read the 12 volt conversion info, and looks
clear enough for me to follow. Thanks for all the
info, The tractor is apart right now, waiting for
the machine shop to mill the manifold. Our local
antique tractor place had gaskets! I go to him
first, then out of town. Thanks again!

best to do a complete 12 volt conversion. It/s simple. and you will have a good out fit then

This was a way of increasing cranking power.IN the old days of mechanical regulators they would turn up the regulator to put out more volts.Now its cheaper and better to use an alternator,reverse polarity,and use a 12 volt coil with a resitor. There is an article on how to do it on the left of this page.

I have a friend that runs a automotive electrical shop. He has used 8v batteries with a different type regulator that allows it to charge more. My suggestion would be find a 12v generator and switch it over, generators don't typically fail it is the regulator that is the problem. Or use a alternator if you don't mind the update. JT
