This weekend while bus hogging I think I blew a pto seal. You can move the engage handle back and forth and it skirts fluid out around the pto shaft,The realy bad thing is that my pto stopped working too. Is this becouse I'm to low on fluid?? ( I hope!!) Any help would be greatly appreicated. very, very few Olivers around here! All JD's and Fords.

Brian,
In order to overhaul the PTO clutches on a 550, you will have to do a "Z" split of the tractor. This requires splitting the tractor approx. in half. The stay rods for the steering need to be disconnected and you need to unbolt the tractor roughly in the middle and seperate the two parts. Get an I & T shop manual, if you don't already have one. I had so many PTO problems with my Super 55, that I had the split down to about 25-30 minutes. The fiber and steel plates in the PTO were about $25-30 each ($200-250 total) from the AgCo dealer, the last time I did one. This tractor has a dry PTO clutch, very light duty. You need to be extra careful when using the PTO for heavy work like bush hogging or drilling post holes in clay soil!

Sounds as though you have some serious problems! The least of which is a bad bearing and oil seal at the PTO output shaft. The pto is driven through a set of dry clutches located just behind the transmission clutch these dry clutches may be getting oil onto the surfaces and slipping? Are you getting any oil leaking from the transmission clutch bell housing? or you have something else wrong (not good) with the PTO hub - spring pin may have come out - is the rear oil leak from the outside of the PTO hub or the inside where the spline comes out? send me your email address and I will scan some pics from my manual so you can see what this setup looks like!

The leak is coming out from around the PTO spline. I haven,t noticed any tranny fluid leaking. The PTO Engage handle seems to move back and forth freely, except for the fluid spurting out around the spline.

What's it look like if you remove the hand hole cover? If oil is leaking from the PTO spline itself sounds like a bad seal on that end. If it is leaking at the front end that would mean you have two bad seals. Coincidence or clues to a bigger problem. I have a PTO rebuild at Photopoint, but it might be hard to see. Thanks guys!! I haven't had a chance to tear into it yet, but i did check the pto shaft very loose up & down, forward and back!! just added another 36+ acres to my farm this weekend, and i sure do need the busch hog running agian!! This is a great sight!
