There is an auction with a 9700 on it. I've got some good info from WFE and others and would like several more comments if possible. I've looked at several and only found high houred machenes with worn augers and thin tin. What's a decent one worth? can a feeder reverser be added? How about those 708N heads, if the combine would go out of reach would these heads adapt to a IH? Heard rumblings of broken cranks on the perkins is this Common? Thanks, Adam

My dad and me ran a 97 for about 5 years. Ours was a 80' and had a cat in wich ran nice except for a fuel leak over the manifold. One of the hardest things we had problems with was keeping belts on the unloading system. I believe the 9720 had a reverse feeder housing but dont quote me. We ran 706 on it and got along great running anywere from 3.2 to 4 mph cutting corn. The second year we had the machine it about burnt up from all the chaff they seem to collect in the engine compartment, so if you end up with one wacth out.

Here is some food for thought, a 20 year old White 9700 vs. Current Deere's BIG (he,he) 9750 STS and Case IH's BIG IH 2388.

White 9700

Seperating area 25.86 cu.ft
Cleaning area 7339 cu.in
H.P. 248
Machine height 12.7 ft. field/11.8 ft.transport
Fuel Cap. 104 gal.
Grain Tank 265 bu. (no extendions)
Unload 2.5 bu/sec

Deere 9750 STS
Concave Area 11.81 cu.ft.
Seperating Area 12.91 cu.ft.
Cleaning Area 7053 cu.in.
H.P. 325 Height 14 ft
Fuel Cap. 210 gal.
Grain Tank 300 bu. (extendions)
Unload 2.2 bu. sec.

Case IH 2388
Concave Area Can't find
Seperating Area Can't find
Cleaning Area 7947 cu.in.
H.P 280
Height 12.6 ft. transport
Fuel 123 gal.
Grain Tank 210 Bushel
Unload 1.9 bu. sec.

A 9700 was way ahead of it's time in capacity. I have heard that a 8 row head was too small for this combine. Putting a deere or IH 12 row head on it would be better. I have been to alot of salvage yards and I have never seen a 9700 in one yet. Most of the parts are available through Massey. I have heard of a 9700 having 5000 engine hrs without touching the motor but the metal was wearing thin so they replaced the metal, and it's still going strong again.

The 708 was a good head with good gearboxes. I have heard that they don't pick the corn good at high speeds 4-5 mph. You about have to run that fast with a 8 row head to keep the combine rotary full to do the best job of seperating.

The 9720 also didn't the feeder house reverser. But AGCO is going to introduce the big White 9720 rotor again but with Massey Ferguson badging and model number. They are going to probilly modernize it like the MF 8780 XP Rotary (Old White 9320 Rotary.)They will more than likely have a reverser in them, and they might offer a reverser kit for the White 9700 and 9720.

Go to the AGCO wesite and look under their machinery locator there is a few 9700 and 9720's for sale with prices.

I would pay around $25,000 give or take for one of these machines if it was low houred and was taken good care of. Look at what they are asking for a Deere or IH of that age and they don't have near the capacity of the 9700. I have never heard of anything to major going wrong with them probilly because of their simplicity.

I hope you buy it so you can take the 9700 and run it beside a neighbor's new JD 9750 STS to run circles around it and put Deere's little 9750 to shame.

Mike
