My neighbor called me today. His Oliver "550" is stranded along his driveway , which is barried with snow. I'm going up sunday morning to plow him out and pull his "550" into the barn. He says his "550" does not have any forrward gears. Only reverse. Could anyone out there give me any ideas of what to look for when I get to his house in the morning? I have no experience with working on the "550" Oliver. I do have manuals on it. Thanks , Scott Green

It sounds like a similiar problem I had with my Super 55 which is just about identical. The transmission is a dual range 3 speed for a total of 6 forward and 2 reverse gears. If it is the same problem, here is what happened to me. Somehow my shifter jumped the shift forks inside. I had to remove the 2 bolts holding it down and remove it (be careful, there are 2 springs inside sitting in pockets that you don't want to fall down inside the transmission). Then I had to figure out which way to position the shift forks inside to get everything lined up back in neutral. At one point I had it back together in reverse and a forward gear at the same time! After I got it right I was able to bolt the shifter back down in the neutral position and all was well again. Good luck.

John , You hit it right on the money. I pulled the shifting lever out , lined up the slots , and instant fix. You made my neighbors day. He was so happy , he drove his tractor strait to the barn and parked it , forgetting to feed the cattle. So I pushed a couple round bales into the pasture with the "770" before leaving.

Thanks John. I hope that's it. I don't really have time to get into anything serious. At the same time , I know he depends on that tractor for plowing the driveway and feeding them big round bales to the beef cattle.

One or two of the shift forks could be broken.When they fall into the transmission it usualy makes a grinding noise when the engine runs.If this happens don't run the engine and pull slowly.HYdr. unit will have to be removed to fix.

Larry , you were in the right direction. After pulling the shifting lever out , I noticed the end had been broke off in the past. Nice job of fixing it though.
