My neighbor just called me for some help with his
Oliver 55 hydraulic system. Worked fine last
fall, now only raises about a inch with lever in
full up position. I can find info on Super 55,
but not just plain 55, which he says his is. Which
is which? What are the most likely causes of
hydraulic failure on this tractor,(other than low
fluid) and what would be the first steps to take
to troubleshoot the system? And what is the parts
availabilty for these tractors, or should I even
ask? Thanks in advance.

The most common problem is the system going out of adjustment. The linkage parts wear or bend and the lever no longer moves the inner hydrolic valve to make it lift. First he does have a S55 but we wont argue about that. The lever behind the seat needs to be in position control, not half way for the lift to fallow the lever closely. The positions are marked (cast into tractor)if you can't find it clean off the dirt and look.If there is no lever then the tractor is newer or has been converted to the new style.Put the rear lever in draft control and see if it lifts, if it does the pump and cylinder are ok, and the hydrolic unit must be removed and the linkage adjusted. You will need a manuel to do this.
