Oliver 1850 Parking Brake

Another minor problem with my Oliver 1850 . I replaced the brake pads and readjusted the brakes . Now I have a problem getting the parking brake to hold . On this tractor , the brakes are mechanically activated . Two pieces of metal shaped like channel iron (approximately 12 to 18 inches long) come from the brake arms on the right side of the tractor and come up through the floor of the operators platform underneath the levers which control the hydraulics and pto. There is a seperate piece of metal for each brake . The pieces of metal are notched in several places with the notches being a little wider than the thickness of the operators platform. According to the operators manual , to set the park brake you push down on the brake pedals with your foot , pull the channel iron type metal foward toward the front of the tractor and then one of the notches on each piece of metal hooks on the floor of the platform to set the brake . My problem is the metal notches will either not catch or will catch and then come loose taking the park brake off . I certainly would not trust it to hold on a hill . Any suggestions on how to correct this problem other than carrying a concrete block around with me to put under the tire ?

There should be a piece of metal on the platform that sticks out and up that the notches actually hook into. The metal piece is held in place by one bolt so that it is a little flexable and can grab the notches in the channel. I would guess you dont have this metal piece on there or it is worn out.

This type of parking brake will work much better than the ratchet type on most of the Olivers or the leaver you pull on the 55 series.

I will look on my 1850 this weekend and see if I can see anything else that might help you, but my brakes have worked great for years

Thanks for the response . I definately do not have the piece of metal you are refering to in your message . A friend of mine has a junk 1850 and I will look on it to see if it has the piece to use for salvage . Thanks again .

You can improve this by rebuilding the metal noches in the locks,or get newer ones. Sometimes you have to straiten and buildup the platform where it holds. Mine work great.
