My "new" 1958 550 gas Oliver was dropped off. I have driven 5-10 types of tractors but how do you turn on the PTO? "I hope the PTO is not live!"

The pto is independant, the the lever is on the right side of the seat sort of under and behind the 3 point lever.

Just a note to go with Larry's if you have found the lever and you see the pto shaft turning in both positions it is normal. When the pto is disengaged it will free wheel. It will stop under load. If it continues to turn under load when you have it disengaged then you either have to adjust the clutch or do some clutch work. WARNING: I hear it is not cheap. Don't be discourgaed if you have to do some work. The 550 has a good reputation and every piece of older equipment needs R&R ocassionally.

Operating instructions: To engage the PTO press down on the knob and move the lever SLOWLY BUT STEADILY to the rear of the tractor until the clutch is felt to snap into engagement. To disengage push the lever forward unti the clutch snaps out o fengagement and is locked in position by the safety lock latch.

I also have a 550 and cant seem to figure out the pto:-( it seems when i use the lever it only goes so far and it trys to put the breaks on? is the lever somehow hooked to the breaks for some reason? i just got the tractor and it is my first ever so i realy dont know to much about the pto systems! its a 1960 4 cyl diesel just got it running good last night for the first time the fuel filter had to be older than the tractor itself;-p ut with a new fuel filter and preheater relay(used one from a obcat dealer ) it is running very nice:-) any pointers on the pto?
Thanks.

The pto hand lever pivots on the same shaft as one of the brakes,so your problem is someone has forgoten to grease the pto pivot point at the bottem of the hand lever. You will have to get this loose and greased. The grease zerk maybe pointing to the rear. The good thing is you don't need any parts to fix.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Well all along I was using the right lever for the PTO. However the linkage in the tractor has come apart so back to the shop it goes.
