Oliver 550 Block Heater

With it being winter and all, I've been getting my early 60's Oliver 550 Diesel ready for some winter snowplowing. It appears that the previous owner came up with an interesting arrangement by which to attach the block heater. The block heater is an inline model with one end attached to the head above where the draincock would have been on the right side of the block towards the back, and the other end goes in near the waterpump. The setup seems to work ok, but the hose that is attached to the back side of the block always seems to be empty, and the one attached near the waterpump is full and gets warm. Any ideas on what this setup may be? I've looked in the parts manuals and don't even see any holes in the blocks in those locations. I'm totally mystified.

A lower radiator hose heater, available from most
any auto parts store, is what I finaly used on my
550. It required a couple of moulded 90 degree
El's, also available from parts stores, to make it
fit in the tight quarters given. The lower rad
hose is always flooded with coolant, so the heat
element won't burn out, heat transfers to the engine effectively, and it is a tidy installation.
Does not deliver even one BTU to the operator
however.

I had a 550 oliver gas that I used a 1000 watt tank heater on. This would be a much better set-up for your diesel 550, in that this circulates the water through out the block. The brand name on mine was Kat's. They are available at auto parts stores or farm equipment dealers. Cost is about $35 to $50. They are either like a tank with top and bottom outlets or they are flat.
