Leaky Fuel Tank on 2255

I need a good leak free primary fuel tank for my 2255. It leaks on the bottom of the front seam. I had it repaired last spring. By the time I got done spraying in late spring/early summer it was leaking again. I have been hunting for a used tank but I cannot locate one. The 2255 had a different tank than the 1855 & 1955. To my current knowlege nobody out there makes new tanks. I have thought about getting one of those tank liner kits to line the inside of the tank, but I don't know of any good brands out there. I don't want to get a brand that the liner falls off inside the tank after a year or two.

If anybody has any suggestions or leads to a GOOD fuel tank I would appreeciate it.

That is one good looking 2255.It must run very good to be able to pull a 30 ft.field cultivator. I do not believe that you will be able to use any type of sealer in your tank do to the built in fuel tank baffles.These sealers are intended to be used in open cavity tanks.The sealer is a liquid that needs to be poured into the tank and then rolled around to coat the tank. The baffle will not allow you to get the sealer where it needs to be.I had a hole rubbed through the tank on my 2255 at the front directly behind the engine.I was able to braze over the hole.The metal in those tanks is thick enough to grind and braze on with good success.When remounting tank onto tractor insulate with a piece of 2" wide rubber cut from an intertube to keep isolated. It has been over 3yrs with no leak yet. Good luck.

Nice machine!!!!! Looks like the one near the back of the Pripps/Morland color Oliver Tractors book, except no doolies on the back of that one like yours. BTW, I am curious, is that cab a ROPS cab?

Thanks for the comments. Yes this cab has a 4 post rops built into the cab. My cab was in good shape when I bought the tractor. I put a new floor mat, some more black cab interior, and rubber and foam gasket in any of the cracks. It is fairly quiet inside. It is close to being as quiet as a JohnDeere 30 series and it is MUCH quieter than a JohnDeere 20 series or 6030 with the factory hinson cab. I removed the original seat to preserve it and installed a JD personal posture seat using some special brackets that I made to fit the bostrom suspension. A seat out of a New Holland TR-70 would be a easier fit. I got the factory A/C converted to 134A and it is very cold. On a hot dusty day I am very comfortable in my old Ollie.

Great looking tractor, Mike. I always did like those 2255's. Tell us a little more about your toy, how long have you had it?? where did it come from?? I love hearing about the big Ollies. Keep the pictures coming...

My 2150 "should" come back to life this weekend, the heads had a few more things that had to be fixed than I thought. Cant wait to get her in the field.

You need to use a sealer called POR-15 gas tank sealer works good in diesel and gas tanks. Every time I restore a tractor I use this sealer.

Where do you purchase POR-15? Is the kit fairly easy to apply? Do I need to get the whole tank acid dipped to insure a good bond of the POR-15 to the inside of the tank? How long has it been since you have done the first tank?

POR-15 is fairly popular among the auto restoration set- there are several dealers- one who advertises in Hemmings is MSC, PO Box 251, New Castle, DE 19720- phone 1-800-777-6715. I've not used the stuff yet, but plan to on a Model A (Ford, not Farmall) and a Cockshutt 35. I think you just rattle gravel around in the tank for awhile to loosen any rust, then swish the stuff in. It comes with good instructions, I'm told. By the way, great pictures of your tractor-I am getting an education (between you and Shepherd) since we don't have any big Olivers in Washington (biggest I've seen was a 1950 GM with MFWD at auction a few years ago- it ran great, and sold for about $2,000- I didn't know what they were worth, and was worried about how I was going to get it home!)

Mike,
I use a liquid liner called Redi-coat. I get it at the local farm equipment dealer. The instructions that come with it say to NOT acid dip as this removes something from the metal that the coating needs to adhere properly.

The fuel tank on one of my Olivers started leaking at the seam on the bottom. I washed out the tank and filled the seam area on the OUTSIDE of the tank and several inches around the affected area and let it stand upright for a couple of days in order to stay in the seam and cure there. To this day it does not leak.
