Cockshutt 40 Clutch Replacement Questions ??????

I asked a question about splitting a Cockshutt 40 (standard tread) on the Tractor Talk board and got some helpful suggestions. One of the guys mentioned that the clutch on the model 40 can be replaced without actually splitting the tractor, but by moving the engine forward in the frame. He said it eliminates the problem of lining things up when you put everything back together. Meanwhile, an I&T manual I have gives instructions to split the tractor (and does not give the alternate procedure I mentioned, although it does mention this for the model 30). Does anyone out there know for sure whether or not the model 40 clutch can be replaced without splitting the tractor? AND, if both methods are available, which is the best (or easiest) for someone who has never replaced a clutch in a tractor? I think I could work my way through either method. Thanks, MIKE

Hi MIke
tryied to get throurh yesterday, had puter trouble.I think this is the best way to go.You only need a feww common tools. The biggest chalange may be getting the alignment dowels out
(they look like studs from up top, they are not)or getting the steering collum out of the way, still easyer than a split.

I replaced the clutch in my 40 deluxe about a year ago.I did it by pulling the radiator and moving the motor out of the tractor. Then replacing the clutch and pressure plate and lined up with a old input shaft, then slid the motor back into place.
