Oliver 66 clutch shaft

What should the fit or clearance be between the clutch shaft( the shaft from engine to trans.) and the bushing it goes into that is pressed into the flywheel coupling ? Had the tractor assembled once and within ten minutes the bushing seized to the shaft.

Nelson,
I looked up your tractor in my manual and found that the early 66s had a bushing instead of a bearing. If yours has the bushing, the inside diameter is 1.90". It also says that when installing the bushing to thoroughly clean the inside of the hub, and refill the annular groove indside the hub with Standard Oil 2X grease or its equivelent. And that's the only time to lube it for the life of the bushing if properly greased at installation. Maybe this was overlooked.

Paul Stanley; It sounds like you are saying the bushing is to turn in the hub, rather than the shaft turning in the bushing. I have been "down dating" a super 66 by using the original shaft from the super,and a hub from a 66, and hooking the two up with a new bushing made for a 66. I had to press the bushing into the coupler, so I assumed that the shaft was to turn inside the bushing. Please elaborate.TX.

The shaft does turn in the bushing. It can get too small when it is pressed in,might need a little reeming. The shaft and bushing all turn togather untill the clutch is pressed down.

Larry, Do you think the problem might be that the early 66s had a bushing and the later 66 had a bearing, thus a Super 66 would be comprable to a late 66. Mixing the two won't work. I'm at work right now and I don't have the manual, but I am almost sure the shafts are different diameters.

Yes that could be it too. I would hope someone checked the fit as they put it togather.I don't have a 66 book.I belive the 77's where the same way,but never had an old one and new one apart at the same time to compare size.

Since the grease is put in the annular ring of the coupling, I am assuming it somehow finds its way to the space between the shaft and bushing.(Mabe the bushing is porous) Because I am using a shaft from a super, and a new bushing for an old 66, I need to machine a clearance between the two. Perhaps a manual would give an allowable tolerance. If not, I welcome a best guess on the gap btwn shaft & bushing

I read over the manuel and it says the 2 differant bushings are the same size(inside).It allso says to get a change over kit and instal the new bearing in the old tractors.If you are useing a loader or other tool that has a lot of clutch use I would think it a good thing to do. My own experince on pilot bushings is that they seem loose when just sticking the shaft in.The other end of the shaft in a bearing and all the clutch parts on, then there is not much play.

The shaft specs for the bearing are 1.1806-1.1801

Here is what the book says about the conversion of the old bushing to bearing.

"All fleetline 66 tractors were furnished with a clutch pilot bushing instead of a ball bearing. The bushing was causing premature clutch facing failures when it became worn. A field change-over package is available for replacing the bushing with the ball bearing. To provide a satisfactory installation for the ball bearing, the clutch shaft, power take-off drive hub, and the flywheel mounting cap screws were redesigned. Consult the parts lists for proper parts or the complete package. The power take-off drive hub with the bearing assebly is completely interchnageable with the old power take-off drive assembly when all the parts are replaced with the unit."

I don't know what you may have to change in way of the capscrews, etc. to change from bushing to bearing. Hope this helps with your problem. Wish I had a description of the changeover kit.
