It should charge full at first, then when charge rate gets low bounceing is normal, don't try to fix it.

The ammeter on our 1650 (and also our 1850) jumps around on the "+" side too - especially as the battery comes up to full charge after the motor's run a few minutes. It's caused by the regulator doing it's thing...

As far as the battery going down, it could be on a problem (internal current drain) in the alternator, or simply the battery is worn out. Check by removing the ground cable when the tractor is shut down. If the battery now stays up, there's a drain someplace - if not the battery's no good.

No it's not. As soon as you start the engine, the ammeter should show a definite + reading as the alternator recharges the battery. Over a few minutes or so, the needle should drop down slowly to a slight + or 0 reading. The problem you describe sounds like the voltage regulator either needs adjustment or is bad. It uses the standard GM type regulator available at any auto parts store for about $10.

Since you just bought this tractor, you might want to remove the battery cables and replace them if not perfect. At a minimum clean all the terminals up real well. High resistance due to a bad cable or dirty terminal can cause the regulator to switch on and off and cause the ammeter to bounce.
