I was kind of curious how big of an engine you can put in an oliver 88 with some modifications. Would a big straight 6 or V8 be too much for the gears in the rear axle. If anyone could offer any tips it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
Nathan

Go to the link below at look at the picture that comes up. That hot rod is using an 88 Oliver rear end and a 400 small block to power it. I would guess the motor is close to 500 horse and the tractor is doing good.

Nathan it depends on what you are trying to do and what condition the transmission and rear end are in now. The really serious antique pullers are putting 150 to 200+ hp through them now. Rich Miller and a few others ran them competitively as alcohol powered super stocks at 1000+ hp for a number of years.

You could swap a gas engine from a Massey 1100. They are 320 cu.in. and 90+ hp. It is a bolt in proposition. The existing engine can be fairly easily made quite a bit bigger say roughly 370-400 cu.in. Or you could drop in a properly put together 310 turbo motor set at 120 hp. The 5.9 Cummins can be made to fit. I guess we come back again to what are you trying to do with it?

Take care,
Allen P.

As far as I6 engines go, I have seen 300 Fords and 292 Chevy installed that looked pretty good.
