Oil seal in oliver 77 -- how difficult? need advice.....

i think there is an oil seal behind the belt pully on the oliver 77. must be since mine is leaking.

aside from taking the front of the tractor off, how tough a job is replacing that seal? do you have to tear the engine down to do it, or is it externally accessible without a teardown?

i have only replaced the seal when the motor was out of the tractor but could be done by just removing tne radiator after that remove fan,water pump,govenor and then the hard part is the pully.first remove the large bolt in the center of the pully then i made a home built puller you need one to get the pully off. then just remove the plate and the seal is easyly replaced also if the plate is groved on the inside from the seal it is best to try to remove the groves. hope this helps

I don't know anything about the 77, but when I pulled the pulley off of my 1650 expecting a lip seal (thats what I received when I ordered a new seal) but I found the timing cover had to come off and the was the old style spring seal. Larry Harison sold me the late style cover and I went back with the new style seal.

Word of caution do not thread in bolts into pulley to force off of shaft as some timing gear covers are aluminum ,you will get the pully off but you have two nice holes in the cover to deal with !!! The tin ones don,t like this either so just put bolts in thickness of pulley and pull using puller .

are you talking about the belt pully on the side or the fan belt pully on the frount of the motor?

Well Cowboy, I could have read your post a little more carefully. Just finished with that thing that turns behind the engine and had it on the mind. Will let someone else respond to your post ... my front seal leaks too.

Nope, don't have to pull the engine or tear the front of the tractor off - - but it's not a fun job and it's not cheap! I already had the fuel tank, battery, and dash removed (not sure if you have to do this or not, but I would) and the pulley assembly came out with the clutch shaft coupler unhooked and the PTO shaft out. The pulley just barely comes out and it's heavy and very awkward lifting.

To replace the seal behind the pulley itself, you have to disassemble the whole pulley housing assy. You need to check on seal and all the bearings availability. Agco did not have the seal (got mine from O'Brian's or Maibach) and one of the bearing cups. Mine bearings were pitted and very difficult to get out (you need a press). I listed the seal part # and all the bearing #'s in the attached photopoint file. Attached are 11 photo's - very boring unless you are into pulleys.
