I'm looking at a 550 coming up for auction at a farm equipment sale...I'd like to know what problem areas I should look for on a 550....can't read the hour meter and I don't know where to find the serial #....Do they come w/ P/S and live pto? I know these are great little tractors for small acreage(I have 20)...what size plow can it have??? tell me any quick test I can do to check her out for problems...the sale is next fri and I'll be checking her out the middle of the week...what is a fair auction price in the midwest??? ANY comments will be greatly appreciated...THANKS to ALL, Dave

The 550 is a great little tractor, I think better than any in its size range. The serial number is on a plate attached to the left side of the center frame. The engine ser. # is on the right side of the crankcase directly below the generator. As for plows, I pull a 2 bot. 14 in. Oliver pickup plow. If you have real nice soil that is easy to turn you might be able to use a 3 bot. The 550 does have a live PTO and some had power steering. The power steering pump is a real weak pump and they are next to impossible to get now. I have had major problems trying to get mine replaced and finally had to have an offbrand pump manufactured. So far it has not been very satisfactory. The cylinders are also hard to find now. Check the 3 pt. hitch hydralics for hiccuping(moving up and down when there is a load on it. Also check to see if the transmission jumps out of gear going down hill with a load behind. There is an adjustment ball in the transmission for this but when you set it up so it stays in gear it becomes hard to shift. These are the main problems I've seen and any older tractor you buy will have some problems. The 550 is a great tractor. Don't be afraid of it if it seems O.K. Don't know about the price in the Midwest but if the tractor is in nice shape expect to pay around $3500. It is in good demand as a collector item.
