it finally got above freezing here to drain the rear end and make sure i got any water out that may be in there. to my surprise i find that the filter
screen thats suppose to be attached to one of the plugs is not. i can see it thru the hole connected to the pump and wedged against the base. looks like it has been that way for a long time. but whats worse is the pump isn't working
the oil filter is dry. blew the line from front cap to filter out. (it was clean already)
question???? is this pump just extra lubrication
for the internals ? maybe a better question is is this thing going to tear itself apart? and is this a common problem ?

thanx jeff

it's probally going to bug me now and i'll end up tearing it all down, but i really didn't need another job to do right now.

The lube pump is needed to lube the transmission shafts. If you do not get proper lubrication to the top shaft the gears that are high and low range will sieze to the shaft. One of the gears idles while the other is engaged. After removing the hyd. housing the pump is easy to remove and repair.

One of the nice things about an Oliver tranny was its forced lubrication system. This was in contrast to the splash systems used on other tractors such as Ford 8600's. This also lubricated the pto bearings in addition to the tranny bearings. I have not seen what it would look like if it ran dry although the splash method of lubrication should have helped. Maybe there's someone out there who knows of a certain bearing to check for excessive wear?
