I was reading the comments on the 1850 and was wondering why Oliver used the perkins in only the 1850? And if it was such a good engine why did't they keep using it. Or did it take many years after to show it's dependability. Thanks Al

I agree with these guys. I think that Oliver did not really know that this was such a good engine. Oliver used many diesel engines in their tractors over the years, perkins, waukesha, hercules, Cat, and others and all had their share of problems including the perkins. The series 1- 354 perkins engine that is currently in the 1850 is not near as good and the ones they produce today. But many of the problems that all these engines had did not show up until they had been run and worn a while. So I dont think that Oliver really knew what engine would be the best over the long haul.

The perkins was added to more tractors not long after. The white 2-85 and 2-105. Lots of farmers took combine engines and added it to 1855,1955,1950t.

The Perkins was used in more makes of tractors than perhaps any other make of engine: Allis Chalmers, Massey Ferguson, Oliver, White, Ford (British Fordson Majors), and maybe others. Also, more recently, Perkins engines have been badged as Cat and also Detroit Diesels. Must be the Perk is so good that other bag name makes want to put their badge on it too.

British Ford used Perkins in the Dexta, not the Majors. Majors used a Ford Diesel. Also add Cockshutt to the list of manufacturers that used Perkins. The 40PD (Canadian model), 40D4/Golden Eagle (US model), and the 560 used the Perkins P4 engine.

The Dexta did use the Perkins, but also, according to Pripps and Moreland the Perkins L-4 and P-6 were used in Fordson E27N majors after 1948. The P-6 six cylinder was a factory option, and the four cylinder L-4's were aftermarket conversions sold by Perkins. Also, to the list of tractor manufacturer's using Perkins, we can add Caterpillar. They used (and may still use) Perkins's in their 416 series tractor loader backhoes. Of the working Olivers (as opposed to the collector "antiques") the Perkins engined 1850 rules! And the White 2-85 is an 1850 on steroids.

Massey Harris also offered the Perkins in the British built version of the 44. Also, for those of you who don't know, Cat now owns Perkins. You can now buy a 531 CID Cat engine under the Perkins name. Makes for an interesting topic in the pulling circles....531 CID 1850???? Also, if you park an 2-85 next to a 1855, they are exactly the same tractors. Just one has the better engine (Perkins) and the other's engine belongs in a 88. :-)

I didnt know that about Cat owning Perkins. Perkins used to be part of Varity corp, which was partly Massey Ferguson. And now AGCO sells Massey Ferguson under their corporate umbrella, so now who owns what? I think AGCO owns Massey. It gets confusing with all those buyouts. AT least it is easier for the John Deere fans, as John Deere still has their original corporate identity, and in fact is the only original tractor company left. The White 2-85 has about 2000 more pounds of beef then the comparable 1850 with the same engine and similar PTO HP, but I think that comes from the use of the heavier Oliver chassis (2055, 2155) by White for their 85 and 105 HP offerings. This was before they went AGCO. The current 85 HP WHites use four cylinder Cummins, as do the Case-IH. So does that make Oliver second cousin to the Internationals? :-)
