1655 block heater

We are having a tough time starting our 1655 diesel when it gets under 20 degrees. We always plug in the block heater for at least an hour before we try to start it but we still have to put the battery charger on it to give it some extra juice, otherwise it won't start. When I touch the block it feels cold and I don't hear anything. I know it does work at least somewhat because if I don't plug it in I have no chance of starting it. On the other hand, our White American 60 warms up very fast, makes noise to indicate it's working, and I can feel the warmth if I touch the block. So I guess my question is, does this indicate that we need to replace the block heater, and if so, how difficult is this process? Thanks in advance.

If the heater or cable failed, here are the part numbers. You may just need to pull the cable off the element and clean the connection.

block heater - AGCO 30-3141748
block heater cable - AGCO 30-3141756

This is the factory heater that I have in mine and it's been tested down to -25. Works perfectly.

Jake,
If the 1655 has the standard factory block heater like mine did, these are just about useless. You have plug them for a long time in cold weather. If you don't hear any sizzling after awhile, the heater may be shot. Get a good 1500 watt tank heater. You will only have to plug it in for about an hour, even in real cold weather- below zero.

WHEN YOU SAY 1500 WATT "TANK HEATER" WHAT EXACTLY
DO YOU MEAN? ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT A WATER TANK HEATER OR A HEATER THAT GOES IN THE RADIATOR TANK?

THE HEATER IN MY 1655 WORKS OKAY BUT SURE WOULD LIKE IT TO HEAT FASTER. A REBUILD ON MY STARTER
AND TWO NEW BATTERIES HAVE GOT ME GOING SO FAR THIS WINTER DOWN TO 20 DEGREE'S. THANX FOR THE HELP JEFF

Jim is talking about a red heater that hangs on the side of the block about the size of a WD-40 can. You plumb that into the tractor block at the drain near the fuel tank on the right side of the tractor block and up on the front near the water pump. This heater will heat and circulate the antifreeze through the tractor block. The good ones have a thermostat that you can just leave them plugged in all the time and it keeps the block warm. I have them on all my tractors including a 1655 and 1855 oliver and they start just like it is summer. If you dont plug them in, you will not start them, and the factory block heaters are junk. That is why you guys are having trouble starting them. I use these heaters all winter, no battery problems, and I use no starting fluid. About $50 from any tractor/parts dealer.

How many RPM does your 1655 turn while cranking. I get 70 to 80 rpm if I'm lucky with new battery 1150 cranking amp, new cables, and rebuilt starter. I've heard some say they get 250-300 rpm cranking speed.
