Oliver 77 piston upgrade

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to upgrade the sleeves and pistons on a 1950 Oliver 77 to the 3.75" bore without reworking the counterbores in the block. Also, is there any difference in the block that would prevent you from using an engine kit from the later model super 77 engine, such as main or rod bearings or gaskets? Thanks

The super 77 has larger crank journals than does the 77. It requires different rods and mains.
As far as larger bores I don't THINK you have to rebore the block for larger sleeves BUT the sleeves will be rather thin. Since you may have to have the sleeves bored might as well have the block bored and remove the counter bore at the top, rework the sleeves so they register from the bottom and bore the counter bore into the lower sleeve seal/main web area of the block. This will allow the head to push the sleeve into the block and prevent it from rising up and the counter bore at the bottom will prevent the sleeve from dropping down. This will also prevent high compression from separating the sleeve at the top next to the lip by having the sleeve under a compression load caused by the clamping action of the head and block.
I have an 88 block with a 4 inch bore where the sleeves had been bored out and the guy used small block Chevy pistons and cut rods. He did not have to rework the block. HOWEVER it is a basket case at this time....it blew up like a bomb! Keep that in mind as you tinker with dimensions. High compression is a killer on thin cast iron.

I have an original Oliver service manual for the 77's and 88's. According to it the S88's had larger rod journals than the 88, but the S77 and the 77 had the same size rod bearing.
