I've been told that the Oliver 265 cu. in. gas engine (Oliver 1650) was really just a Chevrolet engine. OK guys, what's the truth?

Thanks to all of you who responded. I believe this rumor has been put to rest, hopefully for good!

The only connection I can see is that Oliver used a GM two stroke, turbo diesel in some of their large tractors. I don't believe GM ever used this engine in a Chevy product.

Pure unadulterated bird poop! The 265 engine was a Waukesha. Chevy did make a 265 in 1955-1957, this was the much vaunted "Small block* V-8 passenger car engine, predecessor to a 40 year line, 283, 327, 307, 305, 350, etc. This was never used in a traqctor, although once I did see a David Brown 990 that had had a Chevy 350 V-8 installed. But this was not a factory installation.

Absolutely not! Oliver used Waukesha design engines in most of their tractors. Some of them used Delco electrical components but the likeness stops there. I think the 8600 and/or the 8800 White combine was available with a 400 Chevy engine. Odd since all their other gas combine engines (except for some very early ones) were Chrysler industrial engines. Dad had an Oliver 7600 combine with a 318. Blew a rod when it was 4 years old. Maybe that's why they went to Chevy in the next model.

I had never heard that particular rumor, but I wonder if it got started because Chevy did make a 265 engine- the catch is, it is a V-8! It was only built from 1955 to 1957, long before the 1650 Oliver. As far as I know, Chev never made a 265 ci 6 cylinder.

NO! , chevy never made a gasoline engine for Oliver. But , I did know of a man who bolted up a chevy engine to an Oliver "80" tractor years ago. Worked fine with the exception of not having governors .

The engines oliver used for the s55-1800,17-1955,1850G were all waukesha engines. Oliver used the waukesha in almost all of its tractors with a few exceptions. The 1650 was definately a waukesha unless someone changed it.

I went out and looked at my tractors. The 1650 gas has an oliver engine that looks like the old S88 gas engine. The 1650 diesel has an oliver engine that looks like the oliver 1800 engine.I can't find anything chevy in the service manuel.I have tractors older and newer than the 1650 and they DO NOT have chevy engines. So I'm saying NO chevy engines in olivers.

Back in the 60's,70's as I am told there used to be a guy in my area who took old Oliver tractors (don't know which models) and put car and truck transmissions and rear ends on them to make them go about 50 M.P.H. THAT'S RIGHT 50 M.P.H. ON A OLIVER. The most amazing part about this story is that he didn't know how to weld! All of his modifications were bolted on. He could drive his tractor to town just as fast and easily as his car. He did several Olivers this way as kind of a retirement hobby. I betcha he went through a bunch of tires at those speeds! He died years ago and his farm was abandoned until recently when a guy moved in to fix the place up. It was a very nice house in it's day.

Interesting question - you know I've heard that myself a number of times, and a number of times I've been told that it's not true. Guess I didn't solve the problem did I? Hopefully somebody knows for sure, I'd like to know.

Not true, the Waukesha gas engines were used in Olivers. However, Deere did offer the Chevy engine in some of tis combines in the late 60's and early 70's, the 292 truck engine. I have heard this Chevy engine rumor about Allis Chalmers, but as far as I know that is crap, too. I did see a 350 chevy in a 990 David Brown, but this was a transplant.

The one i have does not look like a chevy,it has oliver numbers on the block. The distributor is holly not delco. I will admit that it does not look the same as the diesel block.
