Has any one heard of the GM 292 being put into an Oliver. A friend of a friend said he ran into a old farmer who said he had put one in a 1850. I was hoping someone had run into this swap. Thanks

The GM 292's (truck engines) were used in combines, Deere and others. They were very durable in truck service. Because of the variety of automobile engines that were used in combines by various manufacturers, it seems that combine service is less arduous than tractor service. These auto based engines do not have cylinder sleeves, valve seat inserts, and other features of heavy duty engines such as those used in tractors.

I have seen this done before in a Oliver 88. I THINK that the Chevy will even bolt up to an Oliver bellhousing. You may have to use the Chevy pressure plate with the Oliver clutch to make it all work. FYI, some old New Idea Uni Harvesters used the industrial version of the 292 which utilized a belt drive govenor. If you are planning on farming with it, this would be a nice option to have. Also, depending on what model of Oliver (such as an 88) you are looking a swapping, you may run into cooling problems.

The Chevy 292industrial gasoline version was also used in the John Deere 3300 combine. Good little machine, neighbor has one. Chevy gas engines were used in Gleaner combines from about 70' until about 77'. The model F used the same 292 six cyl. of 101 hp. The model G used a 350 chevy V-8 of 120 hp. The model K used a chevy 250 of 78 hp. Gleaners first s.p. combine the model A, used a Ford 226 6 cyl. of 70 hp. Then Gleaner used a Hercules 237 then a AC 6 cyl. 230 when Allis Chalmers bought Gleaner in 57'. Chrysler industrial engines 225's, 318's etc. were used in Case combines in the 60's. Just thought it was interesting of all of the familiar truck/car engines used in combines.

Alan gave us a good list of engine applications.
I don't think that there was an engine mfg. that Oliver didn't use one of their engines somewhere. Ford in the swather, Chev in Trend Truck, GMC V6 in Forage Harvester, Chrysler in combines, Cat in 2255 & 4WD, Kohler, Briggs & Tecumch in Lawn & Garden, Wisconsin on Balers & etc. The list goes on, I'm sure you can add to it.

Thanks for the information. I have already found a couple of the engines in Massey combines. Good looking motors. They should be able to turn some rpm's when unleashed. thanks
