Hydraulics on Oliver 1555

I am having problems with the hydraulics on my Olver 1555 and need some advice on trouble shooting . I have attached to the tractor a Bush Hog loader which has a hydraulic joy stick (Prince valve) . The two hydraulic lines to the loader valve are plugged into one set of tractor remotes and the handle for this set of remotes is tied back so that fluid is always going to the loader .Both the interlock bleed screw and the bypass valve are set for a double acting cylinder. My problem is that the steering , three point hitch and the loader only work if the engine is at 2000 to 2200 rpms . Below that and even the power steering will not work . The power steering does not work at low rpms even if handle to the remote is returned to neutral or the lines to the loader are unplugged .

1.Is there anything that could be wrong other than a bad hydraulic pump ? I have changed the fluid , filter and replaced the spring in the pressure relief valve with an Agco replacement . I have pulled the pto drive shaft out and the splines for the hydraulic pump look okay . I do not think there is any slipping at the fly wheel because those splines look okay and the pto works just fine . 2. If it could be something other than a bad pump what is it and is there a series of tests I could go through to narrow things down ? 3.If it is the pump , any suggestions on where to get a good high capacity pump for an 1555 ?

My White 2-85 once had a loader installation such as you describe, with the hoist and bucket functions tied in to their own remotes with the remote levers operating the loader functions. Lots of hoses and an untidy installation. So, I installed a loader valve on my WHite 2-85 (actually a re-badged and repainted Oliver) which I believe has similar hydraulics to the Oliver. I spliced in a tee into the high pressure line that from left to right crosses the back of the hydraulic reservoir near the top. The AGCO dealer showed me where to do this tie-in. The return line went to a pipe plug on the lower left side of the back of the hydraulic reservoir. The system works like a charm and I have three remotes now. Hope this helps., good luck

Contact B A Star and see if he can e-mail you the directions to hook up your loader with what they call power beyond. This is a way to hook your loader valve in without useing the tractor valve. all you do is take out a couple of pipe plugs for your hoses and screw a 3/8 plug in the bottom of one. this will let all of the tractor hyd. work normal

It's probably the pump,but a large loss of fluid preasure could do it. A broken oring in the main preasure line (its the block bolted to the pump).Bad orings between the 3 pt valve and cylinder. You will have to check these manualy when you change the pump,and the pump is under the 3pt cylinder, so the whole hydrolic unit will have to be removed.

I had a 1550 with loader, and it originally operated off the remotes- I later re-plumbed it directly from the "live" and return ports on the hydraulic housing, and it worked faster. I thought at first your problem might be a "priority" problem- but you say the power steering won't work at low RPM even with the loader supply shut off, which certainly sounds like a pump problem. If the 1555 is like the 1550, the good news is that the pump is very easy to replace- just remove the top cover, and it's sitting right there on top. As I recall, I removed mine and got the brand and model number, and ordered a pump directly from the manufacturer, and saved a bundle over what White wanted for one.

Thanks for your comments . Everyone seems to think I have a bad pump which is basically what I thought . The ITT manual seems to indicate that the hydraulics on the 1550 and the 1555 are the same , including the housing etc. I have a friend

who has a 1650 and the hydraulic housing looks the same as my 1555 . I would be interested (if you have the time ) to get more detail on how you plumbed your loader diectly without going through the remotes. Where are the live and return openings on the housing which you mention in your previous e mail ? My e mail address is [email protected] if you could send a drawing , etc . Thanks for any help you can give me .

The hydraulics between the 50 series and 55 series tractors are completely different. One is a closed center system (55's) which is always under pressure and the other an open center system (50's)which has low pressure until the system is engaged.

That's good to know- I'll stay away from the 55 series! How does the closed center system work- does it pump against a pressure relief valve continuously, until the pressure is needed elsewhere? What is the advantage? I've plumbed several loaders (always with open center), and can't see how a closed center system would work any better.

Both the 1550 and 1555 are open center systems. Oil flows from pump past system relief valve, through filter, to priority valve* which directs first 1 1/2 GPM to the steering, when pump output exceeds 1 1/2 GPM, oil flows to the left remote valve, to right valve, then to the servo valve to control the three point hitch and is dumped into resevoir. Oil free flows at about 250 Psi until flow is restricted to perform a function, then raises to level that is required. Relief valve only opens when pressure raises above preset pr. of the valve. oil flowing to the steering control returns through the cooler in front of the rad then back to the resevoir. * The only difference in systems is that late 1555 has a demand type of priority valve. It flows low volume of oil until steering demand then increases flow for steering needs. The system pump can either be a gear type pump or a vane type depending on production date, both were built by Cessna Hydraulics, gear was the best pump. More than likely your problem is a trashed pump. You need to apply a Flow Rater to the system to check.

I thought the Oliver 1555 was an open center system . I called the dealer (who sold Olivers for a number of years and still sells Whites ) and he says the 1555 is an open system . On another issue , what is a Flow Rater , where can I get one and where does it attach to check the system ? Thanks .

You dont really need to flow test your tractor you allready know its bad. I have both a 1550 and 1555 the only hydrolic differance is the improved restrictors in the remote return lines. The flow port for draining is top front oppisite the preasure relief,but its usualy too hard to remove, so just use the remote. You wont find out anything with a flow meter that you dont allready know. A rebuild kit was available for the late type pump.
