Dextron for revers-o-torq???

The side panel says to use ATF. Is Dextron ok? Also, can anyone tell me the proper oil filter to use with it...the numbers are rusted off.

At the time of manufacture of your tractor, there were two types of ATF- "regular" and "Ford Type". They were not interchangeable, at least so far as anyone would admit. "Ford Type" was used only in Ford transmissions, as far as I know, and any application needing it would so specify. "Ford Type" was dropped in the 1970's or thereabouts, and Dextron was the successor of "regular" ATF, so should be fine for your revers-o-torq.

In case your wondering about the old Ford type of ATF, up until the 70s, Ford used asbestos facing material in their automatics. With the danger of asbestos, they changed over to organic facing material like GM had been using and that is why they now use the same type of fluid.

I always heard that using using the wrong type (Ford vs. "regular") would ruin your transmission- any truth to that, or would it simply not work properly until you drained and refilled with the proper type? And what will I do for tranny fluid if I am successful in recapturing my youth by finding another cherry '59 Ford Galaxie 500 with Ford-O-Matic? I am also a Hudson auto enthusiast, and they had a "wet" clutch- the fluid you used was called "Hudsonite", and someone got the formula and continues to mix it in the back shed and sell it- is anyone making Ford type ATF still?

Dexron will work in Ford makes but Ford (now called Mercon) will not work in G.M. vehicles.
There is also a type "A" trans fluid that most
hydrostatic older lawn mowers call for. I believe
it doesn't have the detergent additives of the other two, I have never seen an automotive or
agricultural application for it. Hope this helps.

MERCON is NOT the old Ford Type F. MERCON is the equivalent of the new DEXRON II and for the most part are interchangeable in most modern cars (including GM and Ford). Always read the individual product's label if unsure. Ford Type F is still produced and is a close as your nearest Walmart. Do not use Ford Type F fluid in any vehicle which does not call for it which are the older Ford Motor Company (FoMoCo) vehicles with asbestos bands, and do not use any other fluid in these FoMoCo vehicles since they require it. Type A is the old GM ATF, which was superceded by and can be replaced by DEXRON and DEXRON II.

You are correct John. After I read your post and
then reread mine I realized my error. I meant that
Mercon is for newer vehicles that do not require
type-F not that it completely replaced it. Don't
they even make a dexronIII now. Sorry for the bad
advice.

Yes DEXRON III is the newest addition to the DEXRON line and has superceded all previous DEXRON compounds.
