I found a 1950 4wd with a Detroit engine that skips when it's cold. The guy is asking $8500 for it. It has an unknown number of hours, no cab. Any ideas on what a good price might be because $8500 seems a bit steep for a tractor with a bad motor. I live in upstate NY.

I think $8500 is a little steep for a FWA 1950 Detroit Oliver.Sounds more like a $3-4000 dollar tractor.In Sept a collection of Oliver tractors was sold at Kirksville,MO.On the sale was a restored and rebuilt FWA 1950 and a friend was there and said it brought $10,000.However, 4 years ago I was at the estate sale of the old Oliver dealer at Rich Hill,MO.He farmed alot and on the sale were his FWA 2150 and FWA 1950 Oliver tractors.Both had to be pulled to start them and much to our surprise the 2150 brought $8,000 and the 1950 $7,000.In Sept on a farm sale at St Charles,MO I bought a nice 1950 RC with new paint and 18.4x38 duals for $5,000.I used it to disk 160 acres this fall pulling a 21 ft Krause disk.Boy that Detroit sounded great!I know of a dandy 1900 Oliver for sale at Wichita,KS for $4,000.Also heard of a 2050 Oliver with a 2150 turbo on it for sale in Western MO.Theres a restored 1950 on a big diary farm near Hiatville,KS and they use it to pump their lagoon.I saw it in action in August.

DID BUY A 1900 WITH A 4-53 DETROIT, NO CAB THAT RUNS QUITE WILL AND PAID $2200. MOST LARGER OLIVERS WILL NEED THE HYDRAULIC PUMP REBUILT AND THE PTO SHAFT RESHIMMED. SOUNDS LIKE THE INJECTORS NEED TO BE BENCH TESTED SO THAT THEY BREAK CORRECTLY. ABOUT $2500 SOUNDS RIGHT.

Thanks to Mike and Lazyhorse for your help. I looked at the tractor today and it has all kinds of problems. Too bad. PTO won't shut off, 3pt hitch won't raise or lower and the tach doesn't work. And the guy wants $7500! Guess I'll just keep looking.

Asking price is too high. Although this would be the famous "El Toro" if it had oversized tires and hydraul shift, you would need to factor in a possible engine overhaul and the condition of the front wheel drive. My last overhaul on my 1950 at a local diesel repair shop ran almost $5,000. They did bump the hp to 120. As for the front wheel drive, it appears that used or replacement parts are hard to come by.

Can anyone fill me in on the famed "El Toro"? I've never heard of it and I think this tractor might fit the bill. It has 16.9x24 on the front and 20.8x38 on the back to go with the Hydraul Shift. Is this tractor worth buying if it is in fact an El Toro, even with the PTO, 3 point hitch, and motor problems? The guy dropped his price to $7500 but if we have to put another $5-8K into it then it might not be worth it.

The EL-TORO 1950 was equipped with high floatation terra-tires. The one that your discibing is not a EL-TORO 1950. The 1950 your looking at is priced too high. Between the the Detroit and the MFWD you can dump $5,000 very easy into it.
