What modifications are available to update this tractor? Among other problems, the rear engine seal has been replaced by an AGCO dealer twice, but continues to leak. Tractor is a 1972 model with 6000+ hours and a fresh engine overhaul.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

If the crank has been reground it is possible that the rear seal surface was not dialed in so that now the surface is off center with the main brg surface.

OLLIE is correct. There is a sleve and seal combination that is available thru AGCO to fix the rear sealing problem. It is a sleeve that fits on the crankshaft and the seal is made for the sleeve. I can look up the parts if you need them. Your dealer may have never done it before.

Thanks to Bill and Ollie for your advice on the leaking seal. My dealer started selling Olivers in 1945 but isn't very interested in working on them anymore. I'll check around here and see whether I can find somebody who has used this sleeve and seal arangement.

Thanks again guys.

Tom,

There are many updates for the 310 engine you have. Some of the most important are improved connecting rod cap bolts/capscrews, one-piece piston pin bushings, a larger turbo lube oil return line, and an oil cooler which your '72 model would not have had from the factory. The first two items are the most important. Oliver began equipping 1855 diesels with an oil cooler, essentially a 1955 engine, in 1974. Oliver did however issue a campaign to replace these older 1855 engines for a nominal fee of like 1000 dollars, for which you got a brand new 1955 engine. Hopefully you have this block but if not, it will be okay as long as one doesn't work it too hot. The oil seal thing sounds like a place for a speedy sleeve, a repair sleeve that makes a suitable sealing surface for the oil seal. Otherwise, oil seals do take some time to run in before they will stop leaking but not too long.
