The best way to get "into" the brand is to become a member of the International Cockshutt club, and begin receiving the magazine. Go to cockshutt.com to join- it'll be the best 20 bucks you spend in this project. Decals and some other parts are available through advertisers in the magazine, or in the classifieds. You can also run ads for items wanted. Finally, you will discover the names of people who are knowledgeable in the brand, and most are more than willing to help. As in any other project involving old equipment, you need to take a broader view of the items needed- The starter parts, for instance, are not Cockshutt parts- the starter will be a Delco, or Autolite, or some other make- find the tag, get the make and model number of the starter, and go to your local NAPA dealer to try to find parts. Failing that, go to a local rebuilder of starters and generators- preferably an old guy with a messy shop- he will be familiar with your starter, and can probably grab something off the back shelf to get you in business again. Another approach is to know the make and model # of your engine (again, its not a Cockshutt- I believe the 540 was a Continental engine), and try to find someone who works on that type of engine. There may be other starters that work on it. With most old tractors, "necessity is the mother of invention", because there are no dealers or parts warehouses. That's part of the fun, I guess. I keep reminding myself of that.
