Need info on 570 cockshutt engine

Hi I am new to the cockshutt tractor. I just purchased a well preserved 570 Cockshutt with a DD298 engine( so it says on the ID tag on the engine).The other number on the tag is D298X2.. It is a diesel engine and the original. Can someone tell me about this engine? Is it a G series Hercules? Would appreciate the information

Not yet but I plan to make that call tomorrow. I have been scurrying around getting my seals, o-rings etc to put my power steering back together. Now that has been a rather learning experience..finding parts that fit. I had to get a machinist to make two metal washers
"re-assemblation day". So stay tuned.. I plan to make that call and get some pricing for all of us.

The G series is simply a gas version of the diesel.The 298, 339, and the 3400 were the basic same engine family. The 298 is the older version and the 3400 is the newest. These were made in diesel and gas.

I thank all of you for responding. Actually I was wondering the same as my serial number is DN5972D and the engine is 3402176... I am having one devil of a time finding a service manual for the tractor. Time I change the Canadian money to American, and add the postage etc, the book becomes every expensive..

Reprint Cockshutt manuals are available from Allan Haugh at Brucefield Ontario canada [ 40 miles north of London] 519-522-0248 and you pay in good canadian funds ! I,ve delt for years with him and if theres a problem it,s fixed ! He also has other books on old tractors and gas engines.

My 570 s/n DN6019D has these numbers stamped on the left side of the block just below the head... DD-298 3402058. Does this mean it is a 3400 series? Could this be the original engine?

Your engine is definently not a 3400 series engine. It is the original 298 CID Diesel that came in that tractor and a multitude of military application. The 570 Supers used a similar engine that was 338 CID. This engine is a completly different casting than the 298s. The 3400 was the current production engine right up to the end of Hercules which I believe was 1998. This too was a different block than the even the 338, even though it was the same displacement. One of the major differences was that both the Diesel and gasoline versions of the 3400 used a cross flow head whereas on the 298s, only the Diesel had a cross flow head. The 3400 series engine was never a production tractor engine.

On a side note, several big dogs from the old Hercules company purchased a lot of the parts and tooling when they closed down and are trying to get into the parts and rebuild business for these engines. I have not really heard the status of this venture, but in some of their press releases, they have not ruled out the possibility of producing engines again.

Jake, oddly enough your post is encouraging, at least from a restorers standpoint. I've never been "into" one of these engines. When I ask about rebuild parts, people just smile politely and wonder how I could be so foolish as to buy a Cockshutt when "everyone" knows parts are unavailable to mere mortals with Herc engines. Am I hangin' out with the wrong people?

If 298 or 338 (339?) engines were used in a "multitude" of military applications does this mean that sleeves, pistons, rings, bearings, didah, didah, didah are readily available and affordable? Tell me more, tell me more!

Ok,let me first say that you are right that the 570 Supers and the 3400 series engines are 339 CID not 338 as I posted. Sorry about that, I had my gears crossed. I also need to clarify something about the 298 engines. The military version of the 298 Diesel (D298ER) was also in current production up until the end of Hercules. This engine was very popular in gensets and compressors for the military. I am guessing that even though they had the 3400 in production, it may have been cheaper to continue to offer the 298 rather than certify the 3400. My 570 has a military version in it and as far as I can tell, it is identical to the original other than it appears to have a different type of valves in it. Up until this point, I myself have been looking for complete engines, but I know there are several places out there that have rebuild parts. There is even a place in the Bronx, New York that always advertises in a local farm paper, but I haven't had the nerve to call them. :-) The only real advise I can offer on rebuilds is don't go over 20 thousands overbore. Oversize pistons above this point are non existant. Also, you may want to check the link below. He might be able to help you better on rebuild parts.

From my research, I don't think that parts are all that uncommon, it is just finding the right person to talk to. If I find out any more on the Hercules people, I will pass it along. I also have the phone numbers of a couple of military surplus places that have complete engines if that would be of interest.

me too.. tell us more. It would be nice, as you say, if this particular engine was put into military equipment. This way we would have more options as to where we could look for available parts. My old gal is well preserved with less than 5000 original hours on her. However, one of these days, I may have the need to start scrounging. BTW for those looking for all types of old tractor manuals, the name and phone number that Canada Grant publish is right on.. I have now my 570 Service Manual winging its way from London Ontario at a very low price... thank you...

This discussion on the 570 engine has been interesting. I have also ordered the manual from London Ontario. I have just purchased a 570 Super which has will need some engine work. What is the availabilty of engine parts for the larger Hercules engine?

I was able to get bearings from Ideal Supply co ltd in Owen Sound for a 550 gas , now this was 9 year ago and at that time herc parts were available. The odd thing was they would not sell 4 rod bearings for Go198 I had to take 6 for Go298 the price wasn't bad and we used the spares in another engine. Thier # are 1-800-265-3102 or 519-371-0810 the 800 # may not work outside the province of ontario, at least I,ve found that with some us #,s
