Cockshutt 50 w/ Perkins diesel

I recently purchased a Cockshutt 50 diesel sight unseen along with several other Cockshutts. When it was delivered was I surprised to find that it has a 4 cylinder Perkins diesel in it rather than the 6 cylinder Buda!

The tractor has all the original 50 sheet metal, and the frame is also from a 50. Now the question - the serial number has the letter "P" following it. Does anyone know the reason for this?

That indicates it has a Perkins engine. Dale

In 1953 Allis-Chalmers purchased the Buda Engine Company which forced Cockshutt to look for another engine. Beginning in November of 1945, Coskshutt provided an option to the Buda 230 -cubic inch engine in the Model 40D and the Buda 273 -cubic inch in the 50D. It looks like that is what have happened with the 50D that you have.

That's true, but the 40/50 models with the Perkins engine were known as 40PD (non-US) or 40D4/Golden Eagle (US). The frame has a serial number starting with 40-. The Cockshutt book makes no reference to any model 50's with Perkins, or what the P suffix may mean. Does it look like the tub was modified to take the Perkins?

I thought the P was for propane but I understand they did not make any 50 propanes. does the serial # look original compare them with the other tractors. I have a E-5 that I had to replace the tub on and the one I got dont have any serial # s on it I guess it was a replacement.Maybe someone used a replacement tub from a PD-40 and stamped the numbers in. Or maybe you stumbeled on to a real find. Look up the web page for the International Cockshutt Club maybe they can help. There is a lot of people there that know a lot about Cockshutts

The serial number is stamped in the same fashion as the other Cockshutt's that I have. It is 50D-21136 P which should make it a 1956 model, though you would think that a factory unit would be late in the model run.

The motor fits nicely into the frame without any apparent modifications and it still has all the original sheet metal. However, the exhaust is on the left as opposed to the right with the Buda motors.
