My husband came across a Oliver 1850 turbo diesel tractor this weekend. It's in very good condition for the year (1970's) except it will need new front tires, a new seat and some electrical work on the lights. The guy is asking $3500 for it. He needs the money now for it as he's hurting for money. If this a good deal for this particular tractor? I can't tell you anymore about it as I'm not very educated when it comes to these guy things! The 1850 was available with both the Perkins and the hairdryered Oliver. The Oliver motor was not designed for the turbo and displayed poor reliability, the Perkins is much more dependable. There was an oil cooler kit that could be added to the engine (it was standard in the later models) that really helped (according to my local dealer and mechanic). I turned down a Perkins at a dealer for $3500 as the oil smelled more like diesel than the diesel tank did. For $3500 I would consider this if tractor if it runs good, pulls hard, and I was not going to do a lot of heavy work with it. You might also check to see if it has been rebuilt or had the turbo replaced - my understanding is that the turbo was fond of seizing, and the crank ate bearings when it got hot (and thus the asistance of the oil cooler).

Larry is correct, the perkins engine in the 1850 did not have a turbo. Check that engine to see what it is-- it does not sound stock. I have a 1968 Oliver 1850 and that is the best tractor I have driven, good power, very easy to handle. If the tractor is in good shape the price sounds OK.

1850s didn't come with turbos, it must be an add on. I would call a 1850 a mid to late 60's tractor. The price seems ok.
