I have the opportunity to to purchase an Cockshutt 550. When I mentioned this to a friend of mine who farmed he said that they were just an "okay" tractor. He preferred the Oliver and Farmall tractors he used. I do not want to start a debate about tractors but has anyone had bad experiences( or good experiences) with Cockshutt?
Is their dependability and performance as good as others?

Also there are not a lot of models shown for this brand compared to Farmall or John Deere. Did they not make many of these or not change model name's much??

Are these tractors hard to find parts for?

Does anyone know the value of a cockshutt 550 complete??

Thank you.

The cockshutt built 550 is a very good machine. The production run was only about 3000 units. Parts are not as common as for a Farmall or Oliver, but they can be found. Agood machine shop can order any go198 engine parts, most other parts can be found via cockshutt club members. I own a 550 and have found it to be a strong puller all out of proportion to its weight and engine displacement.

It depends. If this is a REAL Cockshutt 550,(yellow, or yellow and red, with 38" rear tires) then the engine can be a bit of a bear to get parts for. It's a Hercules GO198. They ARE one very torqey engine, however, and will amaze you with their recovery upon being throttled back under load, and then throttled back up again. The standard models(non adjustable front axles) don't turn very short, and I wouldn't recommend them for close quarter work, especially with a loader. They are much more of a field tractor.

If it's an Oliver-built model,(low profile utility, and 28" rear wheels) then it is very handy in close quarters, will go into much lower buildings, and no engine parts availability problems.

If this tractor has a hercules engine then it is not the same as an oliver 550. Those models are much harder to find parts for. they did not make maney and only for a short time. After a year or two they where replaced by oliver made tractors.
