Buy Oliver 55?

I have been looking at an Oliver 55 for use around my house (10 acres leased pasture).
I know very little about tractors and nothing about Olivers
I have a couple questions.

Does this tractor have a live PTO. The PTO drive does not stop when the clutch is depressed. It turns all the time but, can be stopped with your foot when not engaged. It will stop when control lever it moved foreword.

What is the function of the lever under the set on the right side?

Are there any week points to this tractor that I should be aware of?

Tractor looks OK and seems to run good (no smoke, good oil pressure, 3 Pt. hitch lifts 200 pound man. Only problem is bad exhaust manifold gasket.
What would be a fair price range?

Sorry about price. I paid 2200 plus 100 on engine,pto,seals etc.workin inside the 55 shows the quality of design and construction used. Here in Mi I have seen 55's go for as high as 4000 at farm auctions[looked nice but a smoker with broken spindle and other stuff]. The 55 is in my opinion one of the best when used for tasks it was designed for. If you can get it for under 3 go for it, parts are high but available. Jake [that was 1000 on my parts]

The S55 has an indepedant pto, you use the lever to engage any time. They do tend to spin some when there is no drag. Lever under the seat I guess is hyd. remote valve. Manifold gaskets were a problem the newer ones work better. Steering can become worn and loose. Some tractors had weak clutches in them.

The lever under the seat is the draft control,casting should show on or off.

Walt the draft control allows you to set the depth of a plow and if an obstructon is hit the shock triggers the cylinder control to raise the implement immediatly, hopfuly preventing a rollover or other damage. Jake

No one has answered your question- should you buy? I have had an Oliver 550 (virtually the same tractor, just a little newer model) for 20 years, and would not part with it "for love or money". Its just about the handiest thing around. Same size as an 8N Ford (they even share some parts- notably, the steering arms)- but about twice the power, independent PTO, and live hydraulics. I have had minimal trouble with mine- had to replace clutch once, not much else. Great little rig for baling, brush-hogging, etc. I have power steering on mine, which I recommend if you can find it (I put it on from a parts tractor in a salvage yard). Price should be in the $2,000 to $3,000 range, depending on condition. Have fun!
