OC-6 Transmission Question

We have an OC-6 we use for light dozer work. I'm not too familiar with Oliver equip. and see that the thing has a 6 speed tranny. However, I can't seem to get it to shift into the lower range of gears. Any ideas as to what the problem can be? Or is there a trick that I'm ignorant of?

I haven't pulled the top of the tran case yet to take a look.

Thanks for the help - I'll look into it as soon as I get the track back on!

i see your tensioners are loose or out of adjustment also. that was the first or second thing i did on mine was fix them. " after the track almost came off twice" good luck
brand new stainless steel stud stock works great
to replace the rusted original ones

There is a block on the front side of the trans case which all three of the shift rails slide through. This has balls and springs in it which the high and low seems to get the hole elongated and it gets hard to get from one to the other. Sometimes you can bump the shifter enough to get it to pop over.

I bought a -6 a few years ago in the same state. I don't think the guy new it had a low range, and thought that it had the wrong plate on it the whole time he owned it....what happens is the rails that guide the gears gets worn. There are square notched cuts in the rails, and the gear shift jumps out of them, and will not usually jump back in, leaving you stuck in whatever range, altho it always seems to get stuck in high.

The quick fix ( to get you going again ) is to take off the gear shift ( 2 bolts ), look in with a flashlite, and with a big screwdriver, line up the cut nothes in the rails. Push the clutch down while you are doing this, to relieve tension on any gears. There is a little guide thingy in there that rocks back and forth. Push it from side to side, and you'll see the notches. I believe you will find the hi-low rail to be the center one, and if my memory serves me correctly, it will be stuck forward, and will need to be "shifted" back toward the rear. Once you've lined up things, put the shift back on. This is pretty easy to do, but as time goes on, it can become a frequent event. Shift slowly and carefully between ranges. Mine occasionally starts to pop out, and I can feel it before it goes. Time will tell. Good luck, and post back how things went. PS... I have'nt got mad enuf yet to explore the long term fix, but I sure that won't be easy.
