Both Mongo and S. Green are feeding you ....

The "upper" (front)set is: up left, 5th (right into the ignition switch); up right, 1st; back left, 2nd.

The "lower" (back) set is up left, 6th; up right, 3rd; back left, 4th; back right, reverse. It's conceivable I have the 4th and reverse reversed. I am sitting in an office 100 miles away from the farm.

Mongo who quoted you stuff on the 55 I believe is quoting from a left-handed shifter on that model.

I own a '70, 1946 model. I'll send you a picture by e-mail.

I spend more time on my 550 and I have slept since then, but let me give it a try.

All the way to the left and forward (to where your knuckles are almost in the dash) is R2, straight back is 4th, up to the right is 6th and straight back from there is 3rd. Now center the shifter in neutral and pull back into another "H" pattern. To the left and forward is R1, back is 2nd, the right and forward is fifth and back from there is 1st.

It is a double "H" pattern with connecting journal from the middle of the neutrals to one an other. I may have the 3/4 and the 1/2 backwards, but this gives you the idea. Hope this helps.

Both of my Oliver "70s" only had one reverse. It's been so long now , that I don't remember the shift pattern.
