Oliver OC4 Starting slow

I have an Oliver OC4 crawler. It always seems to start slow. It's like a when a car batter is about to die or is dying. When I push the start button it turns over one chug at a time. Rrroowww..... Rrrroowwww..... Rrrroowwwww.....
Is this normal? The battery is good, is the starter on it's way out? Should it turn over like a car? Can I convert the six volt positive ground to a 12 volt negative ground?

Any comments would be appreciated.

Every OC-4 I have seen are 12volt positive ground. try nthe 12 volt battery. If you want to convert a 6 to a 12 volt system put in a new resister coil and change the light bulbs to 12.

No it's not normal. If the Battery is good ,check and clean all battery connections to both starter and ground. It sounds like you have excessive resistance in the cables or connections. The next thing to check is for worn bushings in the starter at both ends. This causes the armature to "drag " They will crank just as you describe. If you are not sure ,take the starter to a "good' auto/ elect repair shop. They can bench test it for "excessive draw or draw"Converting to 12 volt will help ,but you are just masking the real trouble.

I have a 1959 OC-46 loader that is still on 6 volt. It has a larger size battery that what you normally find in an auto parts store (I would guess that it is 12" - 14" long) and has been in the tractor since 1994. As I don't use it often, I disconnect the battery after use to prevent draining.

One thing I would also check is the cables. I go with the heaviest that I can find for 6 volt systems, such as the 00 size that NAPA sells.
