Oliver 1600 diesel wiring to voltage regulator

Help!!
I need to know where the wires attach to my 1600 Oliver diesel. I have called the dealer and their diagrams don't help me. I know where everything goes except one purple wire in the harness. The harness had one yellow, two reds, and two purples. I believe this wire is to indicate whether the tractor battery is charging or not but am not certain. When I hooked it up where I thought it should go, the poor old generator started smoking all over the place. My manual doesn't help me at all. Thanks for any help someone can provide.

Some tractors had the water temp. send unit near the regulator.That could be the extra wire. You could have a replacement harnes too. My 1600 has all original charge system. I can go and look after dinner.

Well there are 5 wires out of the harnes. The 2 red wires go to the center post of regulator. The brown or black wire goes to the water temp. send unit. The yellow wires are harder one goes to the top right post on reg. The other is to the bottem post on reg.this post allso has a wire to the A post on gen. The book only showes one yellow going to the top right of regulator. THe yellow wires are from the lights and tell the generator to charge more when they are on,they can be left off as a test and the gen.should work ok if you don't use the lights. Unfortunetly you may have cooked the reg. before.

One of your purple wires should be brown. One of my yellow wires should be purple,its the one hooked on the bottem post of reg.

Steve, per the wiring diagram I have for a 1600 diesel, the purple wire from the amp indicator goes to the "A" terminal on the generator. This is the same terminal that also has a wire (color not specified) running to the "G" terminal on the voltage regulator. All this assumes factory original wiring which had only one purple wire in the harness, in addition to the 2 reds and 1 yellow you mentioned along with one green wire. Are you sure that one of those two purple wires isn't green? That is the only other wire in the harness and it goes to the preheater switch.
