550 PTO problems

After about 2 hours of use after a dealer rebuild, my 550 PTO is not working right again. It was not disengaging so I backed off the notched adjusting ring about 8 notches until it would disengage. It still won't snap into the on position and disengages if I don't hold the lever back. Any suggestions before I take it back to the dealer?

Thanks for the tips, I will try having someone work the lever while I watch through the inspection hole.

Dale, back off on the adjustment and then start adjusting the ring in about two notches at a time. I assume you are working underneath through the inspection hole. After each adjustment move your lever back and forth. Better to have another person moving the lever for you while you're under the tractor watching the clutch move in and out. Keep adjusting it in until it starts to snap into position. Don't adjust it too tight. You don't have to have the tractor running to make the adjustment. Don't be too concerned if your PTO shaft still turns when disengaged. I can stop mine with my hand, when disengaged, but I don't recommend it. Good luck.

After a rebuild it's common to need some adjusting. But it sounds like the shaft and keys could be slipping.

I had a similar problems on my 550.
I had to hold the PTO clutch in and could not adjust it so it would snap in place.
I finally wound up splitting the tractor and repairing one of the three arms on the clutch assembly itself. These pieces look almost like a single chain link, and pulls in the three arms to snap into place. One side of the link had broken. If one of these three arms is not working the clutch assemble pulls in at an angle and will not snap into place.

There is an inspection plate underneath that would allow you to inspect these parts and maybe even repair, but a tractor split would be the easiest.
